早已功成名就的女性神秘小說家莎拉?莫頓（Charlotte Rampling 夏洛特?漢普林 飾）卻為新作煩惱不已，在出版商約翰?布蘭德（Charles Dance 查理士?當(dāng)斯 飾）的建議下，她來到約翰的家鄉(xiāng)別墅，一面休養(yǎng)，一面尋找靈感。鄉(xiāng)間的悠哉生活使莎拉從久居倫敦的疲憊中解脫出來，盡情享受著難得的休閑時(shí)光。
某晚，自稱約翰女兒的茱莉（Ludivine Sagnier 盧蒂文?薩尼埃 飾）不宣而至，茱莉開朗、張揚(yáng)、放蕩，與古板莎拉格格不入。莎拉的創(chuàng)作計(jì)劃被打亂，而一絲不祥的氣息也悄然彌漫開來……
