本片改編自吉村昭的小説《雪の花》，以江戶時(shí)代末期為舞臺(tái)，講述了與每幾年會(huì)大流行一次、奪走許多人生命的天花斗爭(zhēng)的民間醫(yī)生的真實(shí)故事：福井藩的醫(yī)生笠原良策從異國(guó)傳來(lái)了有效的天花預(yù)防方法，便向京都的西醫(yī)日野鼎哉求教，并捐出私人財(cái)產(chǎn)將種痘苗帶到福井。為了預(yù)防法的成功，即使遇到各種困難他也不會(huì)放棄。在妻子千穗的支持下，良策繼續(xù)與流行病作斗爭(zhēng)。本片中，通過(guò)描寫(xiě)真心想要拯救日本而站起來(lái)、不顧自己的利益而感染天花的實(shí)際存在的醫(yī)生的身姿，展示何為生的希望。
