影片根据真人真事改编而成。美国牧师托德·波普（格雷戈·金尼尔 Greg Kinnear 饰）三岁的儿子科尔顿·波普（康纳·科伦姆 Connor Corum 饰）盲肠破裂，在医院里紧急抢救，生命垂危。经过一系列急救，小科尔顿终于从鬼门关里活着回来了。随着科尔顿的渐渐复原， 一家人又开始了平静的生活。一日，科尔顿在不经意间提及了已经去世多年的爷爷，爷爷过世的时候科尔顿还未出生，这让父亲托德大为震惊。不仅如此，他还跟妈妈索尼娅·波普（凯利·蕾莉 Kelly Reilly 饰）讲起了未曾出世的姐姐，而妈妈流产的这段往事并没有向他人讲起过。小科尔顿还说，在天堂，他就坐在上帝耶稣的腿上，告诉他不要害怕。这段离奇又玄妙的神迹，让父亲记录下来撰写成书，在美国连续7周登上畅销书榜首，目前已经印刷超过100万本。
