故事发生在十八世纪的伦敦，一个孤女从一位名为希普（摩根·弗里曼 Morgan Freeman 饰）的男人处听闻了关于自己的母亲莫尔（罗宾·怀特 Robin Wright 饰）的传奇。长久以来，莫尔都在修道院中过着艰辛的生活，幸运的是，她得到了一位善良贵妇的同情，贵妇收养了她。 莫尔以为自己的好日子终于来临了，不料却遭到了贵妇的两个女儿的厌恶与嫉妒，一番波折之后，莫尔沦落到了妓院老板娘的手下。之后，莫尔遇见了一名男仆，他不是别人，正是希普，随着时间的推移，两人之间结下了坚实的友谊。一位年轻艺术家（约翰·林奇 John Lynch 饰）出现在了莫尔的生活之中，他为莫尔带来了生的希望，亦让莫尔品尝到了爱情的甜蜜与辛酸，终于，他们有了爱情的结晶，然而，故事并没有就此结束。
